If you have recently had your poop turn green, then you probably have just one question racing around your mind: Why is my poop green??
Yes, it’s definitely an embarrassing topic, but it’s crucial that you know what it means.
Your poop is a major indicator of your body’s overall health, so when your poop turns green, it could mean trouble.
In this article we will cover a few of the most common reasons for why people have their poop change colors.
Excess Bile
Bile isn’t something that many of us ever think about, but it plays a very important role in our bodies. Bile is the chemical that our small intestines secrete in order to soften our poop, thus making it easier for it to travel through our bodies.
When bile is first secreted, it is a bright green color. In fact, it doesn’t even begin to turn brown until it travels through the large intestine. But if it travels too quickly through the large intestine, then will remain a bright green color (causing your poop to become green as well.)
Excess bile is often accompanied by diarrhea. If you are experiencing diarrhea, be sure to drink lots of fluids. Otherwise, you could become extremely dehydrated.
If all goes well, and you drink plenty of water, then your body’s bile levels should go back to normal within a few days.
Eating Too Many Vegetables
Believe it or not, another common reason that people have green poop is simply because they have been eating too many vegetables. This is because vegetables contain high amounts of chlorophyll in them, which can turn your poop to become green.
Normally, our digestive system breaks down all of the chlorophyll that we get from vegetables. However, sometimes our digestive tract doesn’t work the way it should, and some of the chlorophyll will make it into our poop.
If your poop is green because you ate too many vegetables, then your poop should go back to its regular color in a day or two. Just be sure to eat a few vegetables in the future.

Salmonella
Green poop can also be caused by Salmonella. For those of you who don’t know, Salmonella is caused by eating under cooked meat, or eating dairy products that have gone bad.
If you believe that Salmonella is the cause of your green poop, then you will need to wait for your body to get rid of this disease before your poop will go back to being brown.
Artificial Coloring
Another cause of green poop is from consuming too many foods and drinks that have artificial coloring in them. After all, if artificial coloring can turn cake frosting and soda green, why wouldn’t it be able to turn your poop green?
Also, be aware that even if you had an artificially colored drink a few days ago, it could still be the reason that your poop has turned green. This is because it takes a few days for the artificial coloring to travel through your body, and will take it a few more days for your body to completely wash it out.
When You Should Worry…
As you can see, having green poop is usually nothing to worry about, and it should go away within a few days.
However, if your poop remains green for more than a week, then it’s time for you to go see a doctor. Poop shouldn’t stay green for that long, and if it does, then you could have something going wrong with your body.
